Sumitomo Osaka Cement develops three-nanometer tetragonal zirconia particle and transparent dispersion liquid [2005.4.18]
Sumitomo Osaka Cement (Yasuyuki Odagiri CEO) developed an ultra-fine nano zirconia particle that is only tree nanometer in size. This is the world’s first industrial mass production of three-nanometer particles. The wide-ranging applications of the particles are various displays, semiconductor mounting boards, etc., with a potential market of approximately five billion yen. Sumitomo Osaka Cement (SOC) works toward sales of one billion yen within a few years.

The nano zirconia particle has a highly crystalline property; however, it is less than 1/40 to 1/50 in size, compared to zirconia particles which are already in the market. SOC manufactures 20 tons of the conventional zirconia particles per month. Moreover, with the SOC’s advanced dispersion technique, scattering of light is significantly less (about 1/100 of visible wavelength) than before, and its transmittance of light is also higher.

Therefore, the particles are not only very suitable for functional thin films such as anti-reflection films which require high transparency, but they are also effective as fillers which can be controlled and improved mechanically, thermally, electrically, and optically by dispersing the particles into various transparent plastic and resin materials. Particularly, the refractive index of zirconia is as high as 2.19, and the thermal conductivity is 0.007cal / cm•sec•deg (2.9W / m•K), which is low being a ceramic material. Therefore, the particle is a potential filler-material which controls material properties by combining with other organic materials.

SOC is also developing high-transparent dispersion liquids which consist of nano zirconia particles dispersed into various solvents in order to make various applications possible. Water dispersion, dispersion solvent for resist, ketone solvent dispersion, monomer dispersion, etc. are also being developed.

The nano-zirconia particles are presented in "15th FINETECH JAPAN:FPD R&D and Manufacturing Technology Expo & Conference" at TOKYO BIG SIGHT during 4/20 to 4/22. SOC will search for new applications of the product through the exhibition, and continues monitoring the mass production market situations.
