Compact LiNbO3 modulator is developed [2002.11.26]
Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. Has developed a small size LiNbO3 (LN) modulator.
The LN modulator has excellent transmittancy and has previously only been used in long hauls. However, with the increase of large capacity metro networks LN modulators are now also demanded in these networks.
Currently, optical modules for transmitters and receivers and optical components are being standardized and downsized and SOC has developed a LN modulator that is half the size of SOCs regular modulator.

The case length is half (60mm) from the conventional 120mm, and the case thickness has decreased to 5mm from its previous 10mm.

The applied techniques for the product are stated below:

1. To shorten the length of LN detector
By making interaction between waveguide and impressed voltage more effective the length of electrodes could be shortened, which made it possible to make the LN detector shorter.

2. Packaging structure
Optical fiber junctions and fiber guides occupies less space in the case compared to conventional junctions and guides.
